NZ Shipping Federation History - "A Voice for Shipping"

In 2007, the NZ Shipping Federation celebrated 100 years representing NZ shipping companies. To mark the milestone and to capture that history, we commissioned well known historian, Gavin Mclean, to write a book on the Federation's history.

His book, "A Voice for Shipping" is now available. It is hard copy, and includes many pictures, some colour and some black and white.

Distribution of "A Voice for Shipping" will be handled by Paul Nicholas on behalf of the NZ Shipping Federation.

The purchase price is NZ$35 (incl GST) plus $4.50 packing and fast-post within NZ per book, or $11.50 packing and airmail per book to Australia.

Orders and payment can be made to:

Paul Nicholas, 8A Malone Road, Lower Hutt 5011 (cheques made payable to "NZ Shipping Federation").

Coastal Shipping and Modal Freight Choice

Rockpoint Corporate Finance, commissioned by NZTA, has produced an exhaustive report on the state of the coastal shipping sector, its opportunities, and the obstacles to growth.

It covers a lot of material, but there are several key issues and recommendations:

1.)    While shipping has to pay the full economic costs of its infrastructure, this is not the case with the land transport modes. There’s been a lot of discussion about rail recently, but the effective subsidy of the road network has gone under the radar.

2.)    There is a need for greater certainty around the future vision of the rail network and clarity about levels of and priorities for investment.

3.)    The regulatory regime for shipping is onerous and there is a need to review what international legislation we need to apply domestically in order to reduce costs and create flexibility. This is helpful given some of the work now being undertaken by MNZ in this area.
